A key role of schools and colleges is to safeguard their students. Safeguarding refers to actions that are taken to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm. The objective is to protect children and young people from abuse and maltreatment and to ensure children grow up with the provision of safe and effective care.

There are a number of forms of abuse and risks that children may experience and be exposed to:

Physical Abuse is where a child is deliberately hurt causing injuries such as bruises, broken bones, burns or cuts.

Emotional Abuse is the ongoing emotional maltreatment or emotional neglect of a child. It’s sometimes called psychological abuse and can seriously damage a child’s emotional health and development.

Sexual Abuse is where a child is forced or persuaded to take part in sexual activities. Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) is a type of sexual abuse. Children in exploitative situations and relationships receive something such as gifts, money or affection to encourage them to, or as a result of, performing sexual activities with one or more partners.

Neglect is the ongoing failure to meet a child’s basic needs and is the most common form of child abuse. A child may be left hungry or dirty, without adequate clothing, shelter, supervision, medical or health care. A child may be put in danger or not protected from physical or emotional harm.

Bullying is behaviour that hurts someone else – such as name calling, hitting, pushing, spreading rumours, threatening or undermining someone. It can happen anywhere – at school, at home, in the community or online. It is usually repeated over a long period of time and can hurt a child both physically and emotionally.

Online Abuse is any type of abuse that happens on the web, whether through social networks, playing online games or using mobile phones. Children and young people may experience cyberbullying, grooming, sexual abuse, sexual exploitation or emotional abuse.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is the partial or total removal of external female genitalia for non-medical reasons. It’s also known as female circumcision, cutting or sunna. Religious, social or cultural reasons are sometimes given for FGM. However, FGM is child abuse. It’s dangerous and a criminal offence.

Radicalisation is when someone starts to believe or support extreme views. They could be pressured to do things by someone else. Or they might change their behaviour and beliefs.

We will endeavour to ensure that students have consistent provision of safe, effective and nurturing care, to enable each student to have optimum life chances and to successfully enter adulthood.

To achieve this:

We recognise that all children, regardless of age, gender, ability, culture, race, language, religion or sexual identity have equal rights to protection.
We accept that safeguarding students is an appropriate, integral and equal responsibility for all staff including volunteers and the Governing body.
We will provide all staff with the necessary training and information to enable them to meet their statutory responsibilities to promote and safeguard the wellbeing of children.
